Chronic autoimmune disease of thyroid due to antibodies to thyroglobulin and microsomes; most common cause of hypothyroidism in U.S. Thyroid is firm and rubbery but nontender. Condition usu. develops in women in 5th-6th decade. Treatment is T4 replacement when symptomatic; surgery is appropriate in refractory cases.
