Abnormal retention of glycolipidcere-broside in reticuloendothelial system; causes liver, spleen, and lymph node enlargement. Condition is autosomal recessive and due to deficiency of glucocerebrosidase and ?-galactosidase in lysosomes. Symptoms of hypersplenism respond to splenectomy, but this does not alter overall course of disease; partial splenectomy can be performed in children to decrease hypersplenism and reduce risk of overwhelming sepsis.
