Researchers at Florida State University led by Dr. Robert J Carey will be presenting evidence comparing renal function outcomes in a series of patients with renal tumors larger than 3 cm that were treated with laparoscopic resection and laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation. Outcomes measures reviewed included glomerular filtration rate, disease recurrence, and occurrence of metastatic disease. All patients in the study has histologically proven renal cell carcinoma.
Although sample sizes were small (43 patients with radiofrequency and 38 patients with resection) there was a statistical different improvement in GFR in the ablation group, although the recurrence rate was roughly double in the radiofrequency group vs. the resection group (4.65% vs. 2.63%, respectively.)
