Used to discriminate between nerve or muscle etiology of lower back pain; leg is kept straight as it is flexed at hip. If pain is increased when foot is dorsiflexed, nerve etiology is likely at L4, L5, or S1 levels; if no increase occurs, muscle etiology is likely.
