Milk of molasses enemas are used by some clinicians as a vary effective way to resolve cases of constipation resulting from hardened stools. Among the contraindications are bowel obstruction from tumors or foreign objects in the colon, perforation, bowel ischemic, bowel inflammation, and colon volvulous.
Most clinicians mix 30-50 cc of molasses, 150-200 cc of milk together, heat to a warm temperature (usually done in a microwave), and place into a standard enema bag. The enema is then administered with results seen within 4-6 hours. Occasionally, a second enema using the same proportions as listed above is used to effect maximum evacuation.
Although the success rate of the milk of molasses enema is high, it does not cause sufficient bowel movement to be used as a prep for colonoscopy.
