Coiled tubing used to shunt blood around operative field in carotid endarterectomy; has smooth finish on ends and different proximal and distal diameters with flanges to prevent displacement. Shunt is anchored in place using Javid shunt clamps or Rumel tourniquet. Disadvantages include damage to intima, air or debris embolus, and decrease in visualizing operative field.
