Profuse, watery diarrhea in absence of vomiting; seen mostly in infants born prematurely. Abdominal distention with obstructive radiographic findings incorrectly suggests diagnosis of mechanical obstruction. Condition is due to defective jejunal brush-border Na+/H+ exchange. Treatment is IV NaCl and KCl initially, followed by 4 g KCl daily.
