It is now generally accepted that laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) can be performed with low risk to mother and fetus in the second trimester of pregnancy.
Evaluation of the common bile ducts in this situation can be performed with ionizing-radiation free ultrasound and/or magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatograph (MRCP.) If common duct stones or sludge are seen, ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) can be done with shielding of the lower abdomen to protect the fetus.
