Type 1 endoleaks occur after endovascular repair of an aortic aneurysm and result from a failure of the distal or proximal edge of the endograft to completely seal. This causes the aneursym sac to be exposed to full systemic arterial pressure and to have a significant risk of rupture. Typically, type 1 leaks in young patients are fixed with an open procedure with either open or an additional endovascular technique used in older patients with a shorter life expectancy.
