Health journalist Andrew Schneider has a lengthy article on the testing methods being developed to detect contamination of fish, shrimp, and crab harvested from the Gulf. Scott Smullen of the NOAA maintains the effectiveness of training inspectors to declare food harvests safe by the (we kid you not) use of the whiff test – if it smells like oil it is contaminated and if it smells “okay” then it is safe to eat.
