Incision

After general anesthesia is induced and a Foley catheter is placed in the bladder, the extraction site of the donor kidney is drawn on the anterior abdominal wall. This is done while the patient is supine. In males the site is usually a 6 cm lower midline incision. In women, the surgeon may opt instead for a Pfannenstiel incision just above the pubic bone. In obese patients, an extended port site incision can be used if the fascial closure of the midline is thought to be problematic.

Surgical Details of the Procedure

1. The patient is turned from the supine position (face up) to the lateral decubitus position (lying on side)

2. The patient’s uppermost arm is placed on pillows

3. A leg strap is placed and the patient is secured to the table with wide bands of adhesive tape.

4. The patient is prepped and draped from the xiphoid (lower part of sternun) to the pubic bone.
