Classification of generalized seizures, marked by the classic triad of infantile spasms, pathognomonic EEG findings of hypsarrhythmia, and regressed intellectual functioning. First report of condition described in 1841 in the Lancet medical journal by James West; he was describing symptoms he observed in his one year old son.
