Chronic, progressive mouth infections, sometimes leading to frank gangrene of oral cavity; caused by systemic catalase deficiency. Condition is most commonly seen in Japan and Korea. Diagnosis is made if black-brown color results on addition of hydrogen peroxide to catalase-deficient blood. Treatment is surgery, antibiotics, and topical and systemic catalase administration.
