Congenital mental retardation, difficulty feeding, nausea, vomiting, seizures, hepatosplenomegaly, hyperex-tensible joints, and brittle hair. Cause is defect in renal and intestinal transport of dibasic amino acids, with resulting abnormal amino nitrogen metabolism. Condition is autosomal recessive and most, commonly seen in Finnish persons. Treatment is low-protein diet.
