Commonly used method of staining smears of cells from respiratory, genitourinary, and GI tracts. Smears are fixed in alcohol and ether, hydrated through graded alcohols, stained with Harris hematoxylin, and differentiated in hydrochloric acid or Meyer hematoxylin. Stain colors nuclei blue and cytoplasm orange, yellow, pink, green, and blue.
