Technique used to enlarge oropharyngeal airspace by resecting soft tissue in palate and pharyngeal sidewall; involves almost complete excision of anterior pillars via vertical incision along lateral anterior pillar to musculocutaneous part of soft palate, where horizontal incisions is made. Similar incision is made for posterior pillar with partial resection and lateral mucosal flap over posterior musculature to remucosalize tonsils and eliminate posterior corrugations. Small incision is made at base of tongue to promote scarring and prevent tongue from falling back into airway.
