Examination of bile for presence of birefringent and notched calcium bilirubinate or cholesterol crystals. Bile is aspirated during upper endoscopy after the biliary tract is stimulated with cholecystokinin injection and immediately viewed at room temperature under the microscope. Test is used in patients with biliary colic in absence of cholelithiasis to predict good prognosis for symptom resolution after cholecystectomy.
