Sudden onset of joint pain and swelling, usu. in late afternoon; most commonly affects fingers, hands, knees, wrists, and ankles. Condition lasts 1Ð7 days. Moderate elevation in sedimentation rate and WBC count occurs. Treatment is indomethacin and (in severe forms) corticosteroids.
