Poliovirus (Brunhilde, Lansing, and Leon strains) affecting children 6 months-15 years of age; causes destruction of anterior horn cells of spinal cord. Mortality rate is 5%Ð15%. Disease has been largely eradicated in Western countries because of use of effective vaccines.
