Procedure used for long-term drainage of empyema cavity. Modern variations involve removal of 2 ribs with skin sutured to pleura and packing of cavity with wet-to-dry dressings. Granulation obliterates cavity over months, and thoracoplasty or muscle flaps may hasten healing.
