Rapid onset of virilization in XX female newborn; pubic and axillary hair appears by 3 years of age, with subsequent deepened voice, lack of breast development and menses, and hypertrophic clitoris. Varying degrees of external genitalia may be present. No sodium-wasting occurs. Etiology is excessive adrenal androgen secretion, deficiency of 21-hydroxylase, and decreased cortisol production. Increased ACTH and 17-OHP. Treatment is cortisone/hydrocortisone 25Ð100 mg IM for 7Ð10 days and frequent dosing thereafter.
