Generally applies to antigen-antibody reactions, specifically to toxin-antitoxin reactions; if toxin is added to antitoxin in several increments, more antitoxin is needed to neutralize it than if same amount of toxin is added all at once. Cause is ability of toxin to bind antitoxin in multiple proportions.
