Posterolateral defect in developing pleuroperitoneal fold; most common type of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (1/2200 live births) and more prevalent in males. Cause is failure of fusion of pleuroperitoneal canal. Condition is often diagnosed on chest radiograph; 88% occur on left side.
