Ipsilateral paralysis of soft palate, pharynx, and larynx with loss of taste on posterior 1/3 of tongue, Horner syndrome, and contralateral spastic hemiplegia; also with loss of contralateral tactile and proprioceptive sensation as well as pain and temperature sensation of face. Causes include partial or total occlusion of vertebral artery and branches secondary to scattered, multiple lesions in the medullary pyramid and sensory tracts, reticular formation, and cerebellar peduncles.
