Experimental Ebola drug Tekmira has been cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration for possible use in the recent outbreak raging across Africa.
Tekmira is one of three possible anti-Ebola drugs that are being considered as possible antidotes. A small phase I clinical trial of Tekmira in the last year was halted due to safety concerns when the drug was given at high doses.
Ebola is a viral hemmorhagic disease marked by hemorrhage from the mouth, anus, skin, and eyes and multi-system organ failure including the heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs.
Nurses and physicians caring for Ebola patients are at risk of contracting the disease.Â Dr Mark Murray comments.
