Many critical of this distribution point out that over 60 African doctors and nurses fighting the disease have perished from contracted Ebola infections without the drug being offered on an experimental basis.
Now, three prominent Ebola experts are calling for experimental drugs including the Ebola secret serum and vaccines to be released. Peter Piot, David L. Heymann, and Jeremy Farrar said that each African nation affected should have the right to decide if these measures should be offered to their citizens.
The World Health Organization has stated that they do not support distribution of any experimental treatment that has not been duly licensed and approved though normal regulatory channels.
Supporters of the use of the “secret” serum from Mapp biopharmaceuticals in the two Americans point out that promising results of the serum used in monkeys was published in a widely available research publication.
They further argue that the Ebola secret serum was released only after the sponsoring non-government organizations for Brantly and Whitebol specifically requested the manufacturer to release several doses.
The CDC, NIH, and FDA have all confirmed that they did not initiate or promote the use of the serum.
