Cerebral edema in diabetic ketoacidosis (CEDKA) is a life-threatening condition that manifests itself largely in the pediatric population, with 95% of cases occurring in patients younger than 20 years of age and 67% of cases presenting in the first episode of diabetic ketoacidosis.
It has a mortality rate of 20% to 30%, with survivors having long-term neurologic sequelae rate of 20% to 35%. Despite improvements in the last twenty years in the overall care of diabetic ketoacidosis and the adoption of standardized treatment protocols, outcomes for CEDKA have not seen a significant improvement.
