The cardiac output is a commonly used parameter in the intensive care unit. It is considered an overall measure of cardiac function and is a calculated value as below:
cardiac output = heart rate x stroke volume/1000 or CO = HR x SV/1000
Normal range is 4.0 – 8.0 L/min
