Although medullary thyroid cancer is uncommon and accounts for only 5-10% of thyroid cancers, the malignancy is a central feature in the multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes, specifically type 2A and type 2B. The laboratory values most consistent with medullary thyroid cancer are elevated serum calcitonin and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) values.
