Dear Dr. Farmer,
I am reaching out to you hoping to understand how some things are allowed to happen in this beautiful State/Country. I live in Clermont, FL and on August 9, 2019 I sustained a severe bicycle fall, which resulted in a significant head concussion and wounds to my forehead, arms and legs. The group I was riding with called an ambulance so I could be transported to the ER. They had considered Uber, but I had too much blood over my body and I was in an apparent state of confusion and disorientation to give them my daughter’s information. I later received a statement by Ocoee Fire Department with a very large fee because they are “Out-Of-Network” providers with Florida BCBS. I think it is criminal that an emergency service chooses to be out-of-network. The closest “In-network” EMS provider for my BCBS plan is Mount Dora, which is 18 miles away!! I understand the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network services. When I am conscious, I can make a choise and know ahead of time what the payment might be. But, in a situation when one is unconscious and unable to give consent, how can one protect himself/herself from such large medical bills? I am a Registered Nurse and used to teach ACLS, PALS, NALS and CPR. How can I now shout “Call 911” after the ABC’s, not knowing if the person I am trying to help is In-Network or Out-Of-Network with whichever Rescue Squad arrives? I can an emergency situation qualify as an “Out-of_Network” procedure? Thanks and kind regards
