Acute vs. Chronic Presentation of Budd-Chiari Syndrome

Although the “classic” presentation of Budd-Chiari syndrome is an acute venous outflow obstruction of the hepatic veins or inferior vena cava resulting in fulminant liver failure and liver transplantation, the more common occurrence is a more chronic or subacute presentation with the formation of gradually increasing ascites and hepatic dysfunction.
