Splenic vein thrombosis has been described as a complication of acute pancreatitis. Although historically this was considered an absolute indication for splenectomy because of the feared risk of significant bleeding from gastrosplenic varices, newer data indicate that the bleeding risk is about 5% and splenectomy is no longer recommended.
