The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve is one of several nerves that may be injured in inguinal hernia repair. Injuries to this nerve cause numbness, pain, and/or paresthesias in the lateral thigh.
Because of it’s position running below the iliopubic tract, this nerve is more likely to be injured with a laparoscopic than open approach. Care must be taken to avoid this nerve during the lateral dissection and it is ill-advised to fix the mesh with clips or tacks laterally.
It is always best to choose the most skilled surgeon when undergoing such. Great info!
