Sessile serrated colon polyps (aka sessile serrated adenomas) are polyps that have mixed hyperplastic and adenomatous components and are considered premalignant lesions. Carcinomas originating from these polyps have high microsatellite instability secondary to a hypermethylation process of the MLH1 gene, which results in DNA mismatch repair.
