Podiatric surgeon Dr. Marque Allen has donated $100,000 to Rowan University in New Jersey to start a scholarship fund for the inaugural class of the Cooper Medical School at Rowan University when it opens in 2012.
The scholarship fund has been named after Dr. Richard Meagher, a mentor of Allen’s at the former Glassboro State University, who encouraged him to become a healthcare professional.
Allen’s gift of $100,000 is set up as the seed money in a planned $4 million fund to cover tuition for the first 40 students to enroll. Cooper Hospital Acting Dean Annette Reboli hopes that this scholarship money will reduce her future students educational debt and allow them to pursue less lucrative fields such as primary care.
Rowan is constructing a $100 million building on the Cooper Hospital campus in the Cooper Plaza-Lanning Square neighborhood.
