Wisconsin Surgeons Reverse Man’s Heart
In a rarely performed procedure, University of Wisconsin heart surgeon Dr. Niloo Edwards led a team that removed the heart beating in the right side of the chest of patient Jack Eigel – and placed it in the correct anatomical position in the left side. Eigel’s condition – called situs inversus, occurs in about 1 out of 10,000 patients in the United States. The procedure was done because Eigel’s heart was failing.
