Listeria monocytogenes  is a bacteria that has been showing up in increasing frequency in hospitalized patients, especially in non-immunocompromised patients. Previous to this, it was classically described as occurring in transplant patients and particularly in renal transplant patients. It also characteristically infects patients with cirrhosis (liver disease), malignancy (cancer), diabetes mellitus, and patients on corticosteroids. Infants and pregnant women are also at increased risk.
