L monocytogenes is an intracellular rod-shaped bacterium that stains Gram-positive. It is a known source of food poisoning and outbreaks have been reported from contaminated cole slaw, canned corn, unpasteurized milk, cheese made from unpasteurized milk, beef, pork, and poultry.
