Egypt Has First Death From Bird Flu
In more ominous news on the avian flu front, a 30 year old woman in Egypt has died of the bird flu. The woman had extensive contact with poultry and was hospitalized since March 6, 2006. Final confirmatory tests to deterrmine if the involved strain was the highly lethal H5N1 are pending from the World Health Organization.
California Woman Wins $580,000 In Suit For Negligent Shoulder Surgery
A California woman has successfully sued her orthopedic surgeon Dr. Scott Goldman for complications during her arthroscopic shoulder surgery for joint impingement. Marisa Pollack maintained that she was unable to work as a hairdresser after the muscles around her shoulder were damaged during the procedure. Pollack’s attorney Cynthia Hafif apparently has stated that she rarely takes malpractice cases, but became angry and did so in this case when Goldman refused a settlement demand and wished to have his case heard in court.
