Gradual onset in 5th and 6th decades of tremors in hands and upper limbs; occur mostly at rest with onset initially unilateral. Condition is also marked by muscle rigidity, slowed voluntary movements, myalgia, mask-like facies, short steps with shuffling gait, bent torso, cogwheel jerks, and Òpill-rollingÓ movements of hands. Patient writes in increasingly small script, and voice loses intonation. Brain shows degeneration of substantia nigra and globus pallidus. Medical treatment includes levo-dopa, belladonna, benztropine, bromocriptine, pergolide, and ethopropazine. Minority of Lyrne disease experts believe that infectious agent Bonelia may be somehow implicated in this condition.
