Large, thickened, tortuous mucosal folds in stomach with glandular atrophy that leak proteins into the lumen, with resulting protein malnutrition, weight loss, and diarrhea; can mimic cirrhosis. Most common presenting symptom is pain. Disorder is associated with increased risk of gastric cancer. Men older than 50 years are most commonly affected; occurrence in children may result from cytomegalovirus infection. Treatment is H2 blockers, anticholinergics, and nutritional supplementation.
