Recurrent episodes of severe abdominal pain, tachycardia, tachypnea, abdominal tenderness (especially in epigastrium), and sometimes chest pain preceding fever spike (temperature up to 103 degrees). Disorder mimics acute surgical abdomen (patients often have previous negative laparotomy). Disease is seen in people of Armenian of Jewish (Sephardic) descent.
