Degeneration of the anterior horn motor neurons causing progressive destruction of anterior horn cells with muscle weakness initially in extremities (usually arms); almost always fatal. Although controversial, a small number of clinicians believe some cases may be caused by an infectious agent, esp. Borrelia (Lyme disease) that may respond to antibiotic treatment.
