Liver damage marked by slow progression to cirrhosis and failure; characterized by variable presence of anorexia, fatigue, abdominal pain, spider angiomata, ascites, encephalopathy, and gastric and esophageal varices. Onset of clinical signs occurs in 5th-6th decade. The liver becomes enlarged with the smooth surface progressing to a shrunken and nodular shape. Cause is toxic effect of alcohol in the setting of dietary insufficiency.
