Developmental disorder (more frequent in males) of intellectually normal children who have no interest in other people, intolerance to changed environment, and significant speech and motor development delays. Parents usu. have above-average intelligence and prestigious, desirable occupations. Etiology is unknown, possibly involving tryptophan derangement. Condition is associated with increased birth complications. Treatment is early, intensive psychiatric treatment and stimulation.
