Coagulation cascade factor XII, which is converted to its activated form (factor XIIa) by contact with either foreign surface or kallikrein; activation initiates intrinsic pathway. Factor XII deficiency, an autosomal recessive condition, results in prolonged activated partial thromboplastin and whole blood clotting times.
