Symptom complex with chronic, relapsingÐremitting motor and vocal tics, including repetitive sniffing, winking, grunting, sighing, coughing, coprolalia (speaking obscene or scatological terms), echolalia (repeating another personÕs words) and palilalia (repeating speakerÕs own phrases). Onset is usu. between 5Ð15 years of age, and disorder may change in character as patient ages. U.S. prevalence is 0.05%. Cause is unknown. Treatment is clonidine and haloperidol (Haldol).
