Tick-borne disease marked by fever, chills, malaise and rash; occurs in acute form and is generally self-limited. Condition also occurs as coinfection with Lyme disease; although controversial, some experts propound chronic infection state with need for prolonged antibody treatment. Diagnosis is by antibody tests for human granulocytic ehrlichiosis and human monocytic ehrlichiosis. Treatment in adults is doxycycline.
