Weakness and atrophy of limbs and trunk with fasciculation of affected muscles, which usu. begins in small muscles of hands or less frequently upper arm/shoulder muscles and slowly progresses to legs; X-linked recessive condition. Disorder is marked by degeneration of anterior horn cells of spinal cord, elevated creatinine kinase, and cardiomyopathy. Course is occasionally benign, with prolonged survival.
