When pleural fluid is drained from the chest, it is usually sent for laboratory analysis. If the total glucose level is < 60 mg/dL or the ratio of pleural fluid/serum glucose is < .5 the following conditions should be considered: malignant effusion empyema parapneumonic effusion tuberculosis rheumatoid pleurisy lupus pleurisy esophageal rupture
